THE KINDNESS OF STRANGERS

These are the stories extracted from the article " The Kindness of Strangers " published in Reader's Digest.

1) RAISED RIGHT

Children were playing at the recreation area of an IKEA store when my five-year-old granddaughter motioned for a small boy to stop. She knelt down before him and retied his flopping shoelaces - She had only just learnt to tie her own. No words were spoken, but after she finished, both smiled shyly, then turned to race off in different directions.

2) BIG - HEARTED VENDOR

In 2014, I was a second - year bachelor's student of surgery at Yenepoya Dental College, Mangalore. I was almost broke, having spent all my money buying instruments for the course. After buying a train ticket to visit my parents in Kannur, Kerala, I was left with only Rs. 12 in my wallet.

I went to vendor on the platform and eyed everything hungrily. I asked for the price of each item, but everything was Rs. 15. Dejected, I turned to leave, when the shopkeeper said, " Take what you want. Don't worry about the money ". I was a little hesitant at first, but unable to fight my hunger, I grabbed a packet of biscuits and some tea. He just smiled when I thanked him.

On my return, I tried to pay him, but he refused to accept the money. Even today, I visit his stall every time I travel by train. His warm smile is a reminder that there are still a few people who value kindness over money.

3) COLOUR ME AMAZED

I forgot about the rules on liquids in carry-on luggage, so when I reached security at the airport, I had to give up all my painting supplies. When I returned a week later, an attendant was at the baggage area with my paints. Not only had he kept them for me, but he'd looked up my return date and time in order to meet me.
                                                                              - MARILYN KINSELA, Canmore, Canada.

4) THE GIFT OF LIFE

When the Babri Masjid issue shook the country, I was a teacher at a private school in Bhopal, far away from home. On that fateful day, I left for work early, without reading the newspaper and unaware of the latest developments, with my son in tow.

As we reached school, news started pouring in that the city was in turmoil. Anxious parents came rushing to pick up their children and school authorities directed teachers to stay back until all of them had been picked up. It was noon by the time I was ready to leave.

A man had come to pick up a few army officer's children in a jeep. After dropping them home, he was to pick up his own child from a school in Govindpura. Since we were from the same area, he offered us a ride. Thanking him, my son and I hopped in.

We felt the full impact of the riot just as we entered Subhash Nagar: lay by the road and a mob of about 150 people had gathered with fire torches, kerosene and swords in their hands. Some of them surrounded our vehicle and were about to torch it when suddenly something changed. A group of armed policemen, about 15-20 of them, arrived on the scene in their truck, and the rioters started rtunning helter-skelter.

Acting quickly, the man sped away, saving us with his split-second decision. As soon as we reached Govindpura, we rushed to the safety of our home.

Sometimes I wonder what happenned to the man who saved our lives,. Was he able to find his child and get home safely? He gave us the GIFT OF LIFE, and we will be grateful to him forever.
                                                                                        - NAFISA KACHWALA, Gurgaon.

5) HE KEPT AN EYE ON ME

Driving home in a blizzard, I noticed a vehicle trailing close behind me. Suddenly, my tyre blew ! I pulled off the road, and so did the other car. A man jumped our from behind the wheel and without hesitation changed the flat.

" I was going to get off about three kilometres back ", he said. " But I didn't think that tyre looked good ".
                                                - MARILYN ATTERBERY, Spokane Valley, Washingon.

6) TWICE AS NICE

Two firefighters were waiting in line at a fast-food restaurnent when the siren sounded on their fire truck parked outside. As they turned to leave, a couple who had just received their order handed their food to the firefighters. The couple then got back in line to re-order. Doubling down on their selfless act, the Manager refused to take their money.
                                                             - JOANN SANDERSON, Brandon, Florida.

7) A DISTANCE FOR ME

Leaving a store, I returned to my car only to find that I'd locked my keys and cell phone inside. A teenager riding his bike saw me kick a tyre and say a few choice words.

" What's wrong? " he asked.

I explained my situation, " But even if I could call my wife, " I said, " She can't bring me her car key, since this is our only car ".

He handed me his cell phone " Call your wife and tell her I'm coming to get her key ".

" That's more than 10 kilometres round trip ".
" Don't worry about it ".

An hour later, he returned with the key. I offered him some money, but he refused.

" Let's just say I needed the exercise," he said.
Then, like a cowboy in the movies, he rode off into the sunset.

8) AT THE RIGHT MOMENT

The train from the Mumbai suburb to Dadar had come to a complete stand-still. We were stranded 25 minutes away from the station and I was getting anxious. I had just a few hours to reach my examination centre, to take my third-year bachelor of architecture exams.

I got off and started walking to the station, hoping to find an autorickshaw or a taxi. I met a friend in a similiar situation along the way, and we started looking for public transport desperately. But it was an impossible task. We finally managed to hall an autorickshaw, who also refused to go. We were beside ourselves with worry. We tried to convince him animatedly, unaware that we were holding up traffic.

That's when I heard a car honking behind us. A woman, who later introduced herself as DR. ANUPAMA RAO, an obstetrician and gynaecologist with Fortis Hospital, offered us a ride to the examination centre. She informed the staff at another hospital she was headed to, rescheduled all her appointments and drove for two hours in heavy traffic so we could take our exam. She even came with us to speak to the centre-in-charge, to ensure that we were allowed entry.
                                                                                   - MANGESH KADU, Mumbai.

9) THE NIGHT TRAIN

About 20 years ago, I was travelling with my daughter Srividhya from Bengaluru to Madurai, by the night train. We were going for her second delivery, along with my four-year-old grandson Bharath. Two hours after we left the station, Srividhya started complaining of labour pain. The two male passengers in our compartment immediately called the ticket collector, who arranged for us to be picked up at Salem, the nearest station.

We arrived at the station 2.00 AM, and one of our fellow passengers handed his luggage to his friend to his friend and got off with us. Perhaps he felt two women with a child could do with some help. A wheelchair, taxi and porters were waiting on the platform, and we rushed to a hospital. The kind man took care of my grandson and our belongings, while I attended to the paperwork. My daughter was wheeled to the emergency room, where she delivered a baby boy, prematurely, within minutes.

The tall man in his 30s, I later found out, was also a State Bank employee like me. He called my son in Madurai to inform him, waited for him to arrive, and left handing over our luggage and introducing himself as KUMARASEN.

10) WHITE SHOULDERS

A woman at our yard sale wore a perfume that smelt heavenly and familiar.

" What are you wearing ? " I asked.
" White Shoulders ", She said.

Suddenly, I was bowled over by a flood of memories. White Shoulders was the one gift I could count on at Christmas from my late mother. We chatted awhile, and she bought some things and left. A few hours later, she returned holding a new bottle of White Shoulders. I don't recall which one of us started crying first.

MAY BE YES.....MAY BE NO

This is an ZEN story..,

There was a farmer whose only horse ran away. That evening the neighbors gathered to console him. " Your farm will suffer, and you cannot plow ", they said.
" Surely this is a terrible thing to have happened to you "

He said, " May be Yes, May be No ".

The next day the horse returned but brought with it six wild horses, and the neighbors came to congratulate him and exclaim at his good fortune. " You are richer than you were before ! " they said.
" Surely this has turned out to be a good thing for you, after all ".

He said, " May be Yes, May be No ".

The following day, his son tried to ride one of the wild horses. He was thrown and broke his leg, and he couldn't work on the farm. Again the neighbors came to offer their sympathy for the incident. " There is more work than only you can handle, and you may be driven poor, " they said.
" Surely this is a terrible misfortune ".

The old farmer said, " May be Yes, May be No ".

The day after that, conscription officers came to the village to seize young men for the army, but becaude of his broken leg the farmer's son was rejected. When the neighbors came again, they said, " How fortunate ! Things have worked out after all. Most young men never return alive from the war.
'' Surely this is the best of fortunes for you !".

And the old man said, " May be Yes, May be No ".

With this story as an example " MR. AWDESH SINGH ( AN IRS OFFICER ) SIR,
tells that.....

 OUR LIFE IS LIKE THAT.

It offers no lesson to anyone.

What seems right today may turn out to be wrong tomorrow.
You have to then unlearn the old lesson and learn a new lesson.

Those who think that they have learned any lesson from life are actually like the villagers of this Zen story who don't understand the mysteries of life.

They don't understand that for every thesis, there is an anthithesis.

Let me explain..,

 - When you beloved cheat you for another person, you learn a lesson that people can't be trusted.

 - When you invest in share and lose all your money, you learn the lesson that you should not invest in shares.

 - When  you find a corrupt officer living the life of luxury, you learn the lesson that it is foolish to be Honest.

- When you work hard to get a job and succees, you learn the lesson that you got the job      due to you hard work.

None of the these lessons are UNIVERSAL TRUTHS that happen to everyone every time.

What happened with you was a result of numerous factors at tha point of time.

Since the same situation is never going to arise in future, you can't use the same lessons in future.

Your life could be even more miserable if you stop trusting..,
People can make huge money investing in stocks..,
A corrupt person may be arrested and go to jail..,
Many people succeed working smart rather than working hard.

It is for this reason that I don't learn any lessons from life because there is no lesson taught by life.

What worked once does not work next time.

" Life is a game and you have to play the best shot depending upon the stroke life played against you. You cannot win the game of life if you keep playing the same shot with it all the time ".

IS THIS CALLED.....,

I saw an old man walking down the street stumbling. I stopped my bike and went near him. It was a shock for me to see his nail trampled and it was bleeding heavily.

How you got injured ? I asked..,
The old man replied,

" The auto which passed my way too fast has hit my leg and that's how my toe nail get trampled".

I can't stop myself from helping him. I asked him to come to nearby Doctor. So that, his toe will be band-aided and TT can be injected to avoid further sores.

The old man refused but I forced him to the Doctor, Once we reached and all the treatment is done, The old man was whispering.., It's time up, getting late.., He kept on saying this repeatedly.

Hearing this, I asked him is there any emergency for him. He told me that his wife is in home waiting for the tiffin and he have to buy and go soon.

Little angered, I asked him.., " You got hitted, can't your wife understand it ? What if you go late ?"

He said,

" For the past seven years, My wife suffers due to a mental disorder. She forgotten all thing and she doesn't even know that " I am her husband ".

I said,

yeah.., then what's the trouble, she doesn't know you, then why you worry ?

I was shocked and went dumb hearing his reply..,
The old man smiled and said..,

" But, I know her who She is "
Is this called " TRUE LOVE " !?

WHO EMPATHIZE ?

"I'll slap you if you say another word", shouts dad at his younger son.

The Mother silently removes his husband's socks and places his shoes on the rack.

"Sorry", says dad to his younger son.

"Why did you even given birth to me ?", shouts son at his mother.

The Mother gently places his head on her lap and waves her hand over his head.

"Sorry", says son to the mother and sleeps...!

The Mother knew that his husband got abused by his boss at work.
The Mother knew that his son couldn't get selected for the football championship.

Mother is the greatest example of Empathy.
She vibrates Empathy..!!  :)

TO WHOM IT BELONGS ?

Once, An arrogant warrior approached a wise samurai.

"You're an old fool. You have no strength left".., said the warrior.

I"ll strike you down in one blow", he added.

But the old teacher continued with his lesson, and the warrior left with nothing.

One of his student, who saw the whole inciden, asked "Master, why did you tolerate his insults ?                 You should have challenged him to a fight".

To this the master replied: "If someone brings you a gift and you don't take it, to whom does it belong?"

"To the one who offered it".

It's the same with envy and insults. If you refuse to accept them, it belongs to the one who offered them.

WHAT MUKESH AMBANI REPLIED ?

A reply from Mukesh Ambani ( Reliance Group ) to a pretty girl seeking a rich husband.

A young and pretty lady posted this on a popular forum:

Title : What should I do to marry a rich guy ?

I'm going to be honest of what I'm going to say here.

I'm 25 this year. I'm very pretty, have style and good taste. I wish to marry a guy with 100 crore annual salary or above.

You might say that I'm greedy, but an annual salary 2 crore is considered only as middle class now days...

My requirement is not high. Is there anyone in this forum who has an income of 100 crore
annual salary ? Are you all married ?

I wanted to ask: What should I do to marry rich person like you ?

Among those I've dated, the richest is 50 crore annual income, and it seems that this is my upper limit.

If someone is going to move into high cost residental area on the west of New York City Garden (?),      50 crore annual income is not enough.

I'm here humbly to ask a few questions :

1) Where do most rich bachelors hang out ? ( Please list down the names and addresses of bars, restautant, gym).

2) Which age group should I target ?

3) Why most wives of the riches are only average-looking ? I've met a few girls who don't have looks and are not interesing, but they are able to marry rich guys.

4) How do you decide who can be your wife, and who can only be your girlfriend ? ( My target now is to get married ).

Ms. Pooja I Chohan.

A Philosophical reply from Mukesh Ambani -

Dear Ms. Pooja,

I have read your post with great interest. Guess there are lots of girls out there who have similar questions like yours. Please allow me to analyse your situation as a professional investor.

My annual income is more than 100 crore, which meets your requirement, so I hope everyone believes that I'm not wasting time here.

From the standpoint of a business person, it is a bad decision to marry you. The answer is very simple, so let me explain.

Put the details aside, what you're trying to do is an exchange of "Beauty" and "Money".              Person A provides Beauty, and Person B pays for it, fair and square.

However, there's a deadly problem here, your beauty will fade, but my money will not be gone without any good reason. The fact is, my income might increase from year to year, but you can't be prettier year after year.

Hence from the viewpoint of Economics, I am an appreciation asset, and you are a depreciation asset. It's not just normal depreciation, but exponential depreciation. If that is yours only asset, your value will be much worse than 10 years later.

By the terms we use in Wall Street, every trading has a position, dating with you is also a "Trading position".

If the trade value dropped we will sell it and it is not a good idea to keep it for long term - same goes with the marriage that you wanted. It might be cruel to say this, but in order to make a wiser decision any assets with great depreciation value will be sold or "leased".

Anyone with over 100 crore annual income is not a fool; we would only date you, but will not marry you. I would advise that you forget looking for any clues to marry a rich guy. And by the way, you could make yourself to become a rich person with 100 crore anuual income. This has better chance than finding a rich fool.

Hope this reply helps.

Mukesh Ambani.

BUILD WISELY

An elderly carpenter was ready to retire. He told House Employer - Contractor of his plans to leave the house building business to live a more leisurely life with his wife and enjoy his extended family.

He would miss the paycheck each week but he wanted to retire.

The contractor was sorry to see his good worker go and asked if he could build just one more bouse as a personal favour. The carpenter said yes, but over time it was easy to see his heart was not in his work. He resorted to shoddy workmanship and used inferior materials.

It was an unfortunate way to end a dedicated career.

When the carpenter finished his work, the contractor came to inspect the house. Then he handed the front door key to him and said, " This is your house..., My gift to you ! "

The carpenter was shocked..!!
What a shame if he had only known he was building his own house he would have done it so differently.

So it is with us, we build our lives, A day at a time, often putting less than our best into the building. Then, with a shock we realize that we have to live in the house we have built.
You are the carpenter, and everyday you hammer a nail, place the board or erect a wall.

Someone once said, " Life is to - do it yourself  project ".
Your attitude and the choices you make today help you build your "HOUSE" tomorrow.
Therefore, Build wisely.

WOW...!!

An extract from the book, " Discover the joy of Life ".

Last spring I was walking in a park ahead of me was a mom and her three year-old daughter. The little girl was holding on to a string that was attached to a helium ballon.

All of a sudden, a sharp gust of wind whisked away the ballon. I braced myself for some screaming and crying. But no ! As the little girl turned to watch her balloon go skyward she gleefully shouted out,
" Wow ! " I didn't realize it at that moment, but the girl so little had taught me something.

Later that day, I received news of an unexpected problem. I felt like responding with -
" Oh No, what should we do now ? " But remembering that little girl, I found myself saying, " Wow, that's interesting ! How can I help you ? "

One thing is certain. Life is always going to keep us off balance with its unexpected problems. That's a given. But the next time you experience one of life's unexpected gusts, remember...,
 A " Wow " response works better than a frustrated " Oh, No ".

IS SHE IS HOT ?

" Do you think looking hot is necessity in this glamour world ? " Someone asked.

" HOT "

Being skinny is hot ? Having a perfect figure with flaunting curves is hot ? Having a fair skin is hot ?

Hell NO.

Hotness as defines is too over-rated. If she's dark in colour but has confidence, she's Hot.
If she is able to read all your thoughts and is able to convey them equally just by drowning in your eyes for minutes; able to ignite all the fire and ice cold feels in you, yes she's Hot.

If she knows that it's charm which is confused to be 'hotness' which can never be created by materialism but comes from inside, she's Hot. If she knows that laying beside him with fingers locked under the open starry sky is intimate rather than being in some closed room and not being sure about the uncertainties life caries, she is Hot, at her deepest thoughts.

Still, if you find hotness in the fat of her thighs or the curves of her bosoms rather than the shine that her charismatic eyes contain which can make you feel ecstasy at once or the way she smiles possessing destructive secrets, then you've actually missed the concept of hotness, I Believe.

A SNAKE AND A SAW

One night a Snake while it was looking for food entered a Carpernter's workshop. The carpenter, who was rather untidy man had left several of his tools lying on the floor.

One of them was a saw. The snake slid against it and started bleeding. Taken aback, the angry snake tried to bite the object that had caused it harm. This time, its mouth was hurt and bled. In an instant, the snake took away from the saw but on second thoughts coiled back to hit the saw with vengeance.

The next morning, the carpenter saw a snake lying dead near his saw.

Sometimes, while trying to teach a lesson to others or getting even with others, we tend to harm and punish ourselves.
In life, We can't always have " TIT FOR TAT "

Be Thankful to Your Parents...!

DON'T WE ALL ?

Once, A man was washing his car outside his house. He had a beautiful house, a beautiful wife, a good job. While washing his car he saw a person coming towards him, by the look of that man, he had no car, no home, no clean clothes and probably no money, he looked like a bum (Beggar).

The man thought, " I hope he doesn't ask me for any money ".
The bum came and sat near him.
After a while, the bum spoke, " Your car is Beautiful ".
The man said, " Thanks ! ", and he continued wiping the car.

The bum sat there and watched him. Opposite to the man's expectation, he didn't ask for money or anything yet. Finally out of anxiety the man asked the Bum,
" Do you need any help ? "

The person was feeling high and mighty, above the Bum, until these 3
words by Bum shook him, " Don't we all ? "

The man was shocked, maybe he did not need help for shelter, for clothes, for food but
he needed help somewhere !

He gave him enough money for a day's meal and shelter!

We look for Wisdom, We look for it from great people, someone with deep studies and there is this Bum who has given us a lesson.

" It least matter how much you have,
It least matters how little you have,
You can always help ".

Even a Smile can heal a lot !

" To receive later, we need to give First...!
We help someone, Other someone will help us ".

A SON & OLD FATHER

A son took his old father to a restaurant for an evening dinner.
Father being very old and weak, while eating, dropped food on his shirt and pants.
Others diners watched him in disgust while his son was calm.

After he finished eating, his son who was not at all embarrassed, quietly took him to the wash room, wiped the food particles, removed the stains, combed his hair and fitted his spectales firmly. When they came out, the entire restaurnent was watching them in dead silence, not able to grasp how someone could embarrass themselves publicly like that.

The son settled the bill and started walking out with his father.
At that time, an old man amongst the diners called out to the son and asked him,

" Don't you think you have left something behind ? "

The son replied, " No sir, I haven't ".
The old man retorted," Yes, You have !
You left a lesson for every son and hope for every father ".

The restaurant went silent.

YOUR TIME WILL COME

Kenya is two hours ahead of Nigeria, but it does not mean that Nigeria is slow, and it does not mean that Kenya is faster than Nigeria. Both countries are working based on their own " Time Zone ".

Some one is still single.. Someone got married and 'waited' ten years before having a child, there is another who had had a baby within one year after marriage.

Someone graduated at the age of 22, yet waited 5 years before securing a job; and there is another who graduated at the age of 27 and secured employment just after national service.

Joyce Meyer started her own ministry at age 41 and still today at 71 years old.

Someone became CEO at the age of 25 and died at the age of 50 while another became a CEO at the age of 50 and lived to 90 years.

Everyone worked based on thier Time Zone.. Some people have everything that work fast for them. Work in your " Time Zone ".

Colleagues, friends, relatives, associates, younger one(s) might "seem" to go ahead of you. Don't envy them, it's their " Time Zone ". Don't get into comparison mode as everyone comes with his individual time zone destiny to learn their unlearnt lessons of life.. Your time will come too when you have experienced that unlearnt lesson of life to enjoy that fuller experience.. Hold on, be Strong, and stay true to yourself.

All things shall work together for everyone's good at their right time.
You're not late.., you're on YOUR TIME...!!

IS THERE AN END FOR IT ?

One night just before the shopkeeper was about to close the shop, a dog came into the shop. There was a bag in its mouth. The bag had a list of items to be bought and money. The shopkeeper took the money and kept the items in the bag.

Immediately, the dog picked up the bag of items and left. The shopkeeper was surprised and went behind the dog to see who the owner was.

The dog waited at the bus stop. After sometime, a bus came and the dog got into the bus. As soon as the conductor came, it moved forward to show his neck belt which had money and the address as well. The conductor took the money and put the ticket in his neck belt again.

When it reached the destination, the dog went to the front and wagged his tail indicating that he wanted to get down. The moment the bus stopped, it got down. The shopkeeper was still following it.

The dog knocked on the door of a house with its legs. Its owner came from inside
and beat it with a stick.

The shocked shopkeeper asked him,
" Why are you beating the dog? " to which the owner replied,
" He disturbed my sleep, It could have taken the keys with it ".

Is there an End for Expectation ?
Absolutely NO.

This is the truth of life. There is no end to the expectations people have from you.
The moment you go wrong, they start pointing at your mistakes. All the good done
in the past is forgotten. Any small mistake committed then gets magnified.
This is the Nature of this Material World.

CUT THE ROPE

There lived a man, he wanted to climb the highest mountain in the world.  After many years of preparation he decided to give it go. Because he wanted to achieve glory alone, he started climbing the mountain alone.

It was cold, the night arrival, it was dark, zero visibility but he still wanted to climb. Instead of taking a halt, he kept climbing.

Suddenly, his foot slipped and he lost his control. It was a free fall, he felt the pull of gravity. In those moments of great fear, it reminded of all the good and bad things he did in his life.

He was now thinking of how close was his death, all of a sudden he felt a hard pull by a rope tied to his waist.

His body was now hanging, with only a support of rope, He cried and screamed, "Help me God ".

A voice came from cloud, " What do you want me to do "?
The man cried, " Save me God ! "

The voice came, " Will you do as I say " ?

The man cried, " Yes anything, Please save me ".

The voice came, " Cut the rope tied on your waist ".

The man did not cut the rope and held it by all his strength.

Next morning when the rescue team arrived, it said that the climber was dead and frozen, he was holding on his rope which was frozen,

Only Six feet above ground !

So, How attached are you with your rope ?
Will you let go ?

MORAL : Sometimes, It is better to let it go.

WHAT HAPPEN TO THE WOOD CUTTER ?

WEST AFRICAN STORY ABOUT TROUBLE..,

Bwana Shida was going out to chop wood one day for a fire. He was working to fell it on a hot day and he was almost finished when... " Suddenly he heard a roar behind him and scrambled up the the tree lickety-split. Lion...!! He looked down and saw a lion... but just as he thought he had gotten to safety high up in the tree branches, he turned and saw a.... What dangerous animal do you think might be in the tree ? Yes, A Poisonous Snake...!! He thought to himself " I'll just jump in the river where the snake and lion won't follow me, but when he looked down, he saw another sharp row of teeth waiting for him. Crocodile...!!

Bwana Shida dangled in the breeze, threatened every which way by aggressive dangers. He'll die ! Things only got worse for Bwana Shida as the wind began to pick up and make it difficult for him to keep his gri after he was already tired from working. Nonetheless, Bwana Shida said to himself,                " I'm just going to hold on as long as I can and wait to see what happens.

Just when the fortune seemed most impossible to turn for the better: The wind made the tree fall, which pinned the lion and snake, and the sound of the mighty tree cracking sent the  Crocodile into a watery skedalle that took him out of predatory reach. To his astonishment, Bwana Shida walked away unharmed.

MORAL: When things are tough you have to hold on, and that when things are tougher you have to hold tigher, because you never know what the wind may blow your way.
